The North Carolina & Virginia Railroad operates from Boykins, Virginia to Ahoskie and Tunis, serving businesses in the Northeastern North Carolina counties of Northampton, Bertie, and Hertford.

The railroad began operations after its parent company purchased the line from CSX Transportation in 1987. The North Carolina & Virginia is a member of the RailAmerica Inc. family of railroads headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla. (The Chesapeake & Albemarle Railroad is also a RailAmerica property.)

Commodities carried by the railroad are plate steel, scrap metal, peanuts, chemicals, and grain.

Principal shippers are: Nucor Steel - distributor of steel and metal products, Perdue Farms of Cofield – distributor of animal feed; Golden Peanut Company of Ahoskie – processor of peanut products; Georgia Pacific Company of Conway – processor of forest products and industrial chemicals (resins); and Resinall of Severn - resin producer.
